Absolutely Fab Sab at Rainham!

After yesterday's downfall, which caused flooding and misery in south Essex from Basildon to Shoebury. There is always a bright side, that being the number of seabirds recorded in the Thames Estuary, over 200 Black Terns, along with a few Little and Arctic Terns. Also, 2 Arctic & 5 Great Skuas along with a few Little Gulls.

En route to Rainham this morning when news came through that Andy Tweed had an adult summer Sabine's Gull on the mud in Aveley Bay. I was there within ten minutes and had great scope views as it rested beside the river, occasionally flying out on to the river. This amazingly was apparently the fourth Sabine's seen this morning, and I later saw a different adult summer bird. The below images were phonescoped, with my scope on it's maximum 60x zoom and iPhone also on maximum zoom, hence the images are only record shots.

Also good numbers of terns feeding on the river, including many Common, along with at least 7 Black Terns, 3 Arctic Terns and 1 Little Tern along with 5 or 6 Little Gulls......great stuff whoa hoo, let's have some more rain!

Vange Marsh

Spent the morning on the RSPB's reserve Vange Marsh, after two hours I eventually managed to find the Wood Sandpiper which has been present for the last few days. A good selection of waders including 4 Greenshank, Redshank, 8+ Common Sandpipers, 7 Green Sandpipers, 20+ Black-tailed Godwits and 36 Curlew during high tide. Had flyover Hobby, Kestrel and Sparrowhawk.

Common Darter, Blue-tailed Damselfly and Emperor Dragonfly seen along with a good selection of butterflies and at least a dozen Silver Y moths.

Hobby Over Garden

Sat in my garden, when a Hobby flew over, only the third record in twelve years. My camera was handy and I quickly fired off a few shots, exposure is not great and they are heavily cropped, but I think you can tell what it is!

The dog missed it though, bless her!
