'Bumbarrel' is an old name for the Long-tailed Tit, everyone's favourite garden bird. And the reason they're called that is for the shape of their nest. It's almost spherical, with a little hole at the front, and made from a special weave of moss, lichen, spiders' webs and feathers.
Spent a couple of hours wandering around Dagenham Chase this morning in the summer like weather conditions. Only managed one new year tick and they were two Little Ringed Plovers on The Slack, but distant and a heat haze forming resulted in a heavily cropped rubbish picture.

There are I think just two pairs of Lapwings this year looking to nest on The Scrape and I just happened to snap a bit of Lapwing porn! Again quite heavily cropped.
Lapwings have such a range of colours!
It was quite for summer migrants, possibly the weather is now too good! But there are plenty of Chiffchaffs and Blackcaps singing.
